On March 13-14, Baku hosted the international symposium “Global Perspectives in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Thyroid Cancer.” The event was jointly organized by the National Oncology Center, the Azerbaijan Oncology Society, and the Azerbaijan Nuclear Medicine Society.
At the opening ceremony, Professor Aziz Aliyev—surgeon-oncologist at the Head and Neck Surgery Department of the National Oncology Center and Rector of the Baku branch of the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University—emphasized the state’s continuous focus on developing oncology in the country. He noted that the National Oncology Center’s surgical building was opened in 2009 with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev, while the Children's Oncology Clinic was commissioned at the initiative of First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva.
Professor Aliyev reported that the National Oncology Center recorded over 1 million visits between 2020 and 2025. During this period, the center treated approximately 235,000 patients and performed roughly 50,000 surgeries. Over 18,000 people received radiation therapy, and 32,000 underwent chemotherapy, with the total number of chemotherapy services approaching 200,000. Additionally, robotic surgeries were successfully pioneered in the country at the Center under the leadership of its Director General, Academician Jamil Aliyev.
Statistics show that lung, stomach, and colon cancers are most common among men in Azerbaijan, while breast, colon, and thyroid cancers are the most prevalent among women.
During his presentation, Professor Aliyev provided detailed insights into surgical treatment tactics and modern approaches to thyroid cancer. The symposium also featured presentations by international specialists from Europe, USA and Turkey:
Professor Francesco Giammarile, representing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), discussed the organization's contributions to advancing oncology services.
Professor Seza Güleç, Director of the Miami Cancer Research Center and Chief of Surgical Oncology at HCA Florida Aventura Hospital;
Professor Alptekin Gürsoy, Head of the Thyroid Working Group at the Turkish Association of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Professor at Angora Thyroid Health Clinic
Professor Seyfettin Ilgan, Head of the Radionuclide Therapy Department at Özəl Ankara Güven Hospital and Head of the Radionuclide Therapy Department at Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine.
Discussions centered on radioiodine therapy and emerging trends in local practice.
During the event, Professor Aziz Aliyev was honored with the "Excellence in Surgical Healing" award from the Miami Cancer Research Center—a scientific and charitable organization dedicated to the global fight against cancer through research, education, and patient care.
As part of the symposium, master classes were held on March 13 at the Educational and Simulation Center of the Baku branch of Sechenov University. These sessions aimed to enhance practical skills in ultrasound-guided thyroid nodule biopsy, cervical lymph node assessment, and the international thyroid cancer classification system. Under expert guidance, participants worked through clinical assignments and discussed real-life cases.
The symposium, featuring international experts, drew significant interest from both local and foreign specialists. It provided a robust platform for exchanging experience and exploring scientific innovations in modern diagnosis and treatment.
